So you’ve picked up your first Honda Grom (or a quality clone). Congrats! You’re going to love it. The Honda Grom is hands-down the most fun you’ll have under 70 miles per hour. Out of the box, the Grom packs around 9 horsepower and will do about 60 miles per hour – maybe a little more if you “tuck” and are headed downhill. Nonetheless, one trip out with your local Grom Squad and you’ll find yourself itching for a little more. Not sure where to start? 1.) Big Bore Kit
From the factory, your Grom packs a 125cc engine. In other words, there is a total of 125 cubic centimeters inside your little engine where the magic happens. Kicking that up a few notches with a big bore kit is the quickest way to boost power. The kits come complete with a new cylinder head, piston, and all other necessary supporting pieces. As you can see in the comparison table below, you have a lot of options. Kits will vary in size, additional components, and obviously price. One big variation you will notice is in the design of the cylinder head: 2-valve vs. 4-valve. Simply put, 4-valve heads will allow more airflow, and therefore produce more power, all other things being equal. Also note: The kits in our table will fit any Grom 2013-2019.
2.) Exhaust
Now, I suppose it can be argued (and it has – over and over) that an aftermarket exhaust for the Honda Grom is not a performance mod on its own. I, however, would personally disagree. For better or worse – depending on your setup – it will alter the way your Grom performs. And better yet – an aftermarket exhaust is an investment in safety as it boosts the volume of your ride, sometimes pretty dramatically. 3.) Intake
The intake system is one of the easiest and most affordable Honda Grom performance parts to upgrade. Plus, when combined with an aftermarket exhaust, will yield an even bigger improvement. As the old adage goes: more air in + more air out = more power. Like most factory systems, your stock Grom intake was not designed with performance in mind. In fact, there is a free DIY Grom Airbox mod that anyone can do with common handtools that will net you a couple extra MPH’s on the top end, along with improved throttle response and acceleration. 4.) Suspension
Although it won’t add power, your suspension system is one of the best parts to upgrade to improve performance on your Honda Grom. In fact, the harder you send your Grom, the more you need to upgrade your factory setup. From the factory, the Grom comes equipped with 31mm inverted forks up front, providing about 4 inches of total travel. Out back, a single shock (also with approximately 4 inches of travel) leaves much to be desired, especially if you’re on the fluffier side of 200 lbs. Any of the following options will provide you not only with a comfier ride, but a much more capable machine.
5.) Fuel Controller
While it isn’t the the sexiest thing on the list, a fuel controller is definitely something you should consider picking up if you’re serious about getting more power out of your Grom. What exactly does a fuel controller do? Well, remember our earlier conversation about more air in + more air out = more power? There is one additional factor to the equation: more fuel.
Essentially, fuel controllers communicate with your engine control unit to alter the signals sent to your fuel injectors using fuel maps. These modified fuel maps tell your injectors to produce more fuel, which complements the additional air flowing through the cylinder thanks to your other mods. While it is certainly possible to change your intake and exhaust without spending the extra cash on a fuel controller, (1) you run the the risk of starving your engine of fuel, or ‘leaning it out’ causing it to run hotter than it should which can ultimately cause engine failure, and (2) running a fuel controller is the only way to maximize the performance improvements from your other modifications. In other words, a fuel controller is your cherry on top. It ties everything together and gives your engine that perfect mixture of fuel and air necessary to achieve optimum performance levels.
